Voice of America(VOA) has reported that new UN Special Rapporteur on human rights in North Korea Tomas Ojea Quintana will actively work to contact North Korean government officials.
In a phone interview with VOA on Thursday, Quintana said that the first thing he will do is send a letter to the North Korean mission to the UN. He also revealed his plans to meet North Korean government officials and discuss the importance of exchanges.
Quintana said that he will try to visit North Korea, despite the expected difficulty to obtain an entrance permit from Pyongyang.
He added that he especially worries about happenings at political prisoner camps in the North and pledged to find ways to improve the treatment and conditions of the inmates.
Quintana took office as the UN's special rapporteur in charge of North Korean human rights conditions early this month after taking on the position of special rapporteur for Myanmar for six years.
