Power Demand Posts New High amid Sizzling Temperatures

Electricity demand again posted a new high on Monday as a heat wave continued to grip the nation and as companies, where more power is consumed, resumed production following short summer breaks.

As of 11 a.m. Monday, power demand topped 82 million kilowatts, breaking the previous record of 81-point-one million kilowatts set at 3 p.m. on July 26th.

The Korea Power Exchange forecast that power demand will break previous records repeatedly this week.

The government said that with the completion of four new power plants, maximum power supply has surged to 92 million kilowatts this year. However, the government was quick to add that if electricity reserves fall below five million kilowatts, it will take emergency steps to supply power.
