Reckitt Benckiser(RB) Korea has announced a compensation plan for South Korean victims of its toxic humidifier sterilizers that would pay up to 550 million won, or almost 495-thousand U.S. dollars, to those who died after using the products.
RB Korea on Sunday revealed the compensation package, finalizing its plans for the class one and two victims on whom the product damage has been deemed "almost certain," or "highly likely" through the South Korean government's two rounds of investigations.
The manufacturer said that it will receive applications for compensation beginning Monday.
The firm plans to pay 350 million won in compensation for emotional distress, in addition to the loss of wage earning capacity and past and future medical costs.
As for cases involving fatal or grave injuries to children, one billion won will be given to the victims or their families.
A Seoul court official said the company’s overall compensation plan appears to fall short of the maximum compensation it can be ordered to pay through trials.
Choi Seung-un, head of the coalition of humidifier disinfectant victims’ families, said the CEO of the British company should make a direct and official apology in addition to the compensation.
The South Korean government investigation has identified more than 200 victims in categories one and two of the deadly humidifier sterilizer case. Of them, more than 70 people died using RB Korea's products.
