Samsung Electronics' quarterly operating profit topped eight trillion won for the first time in some two years.
The electronics giant announced on Thursday that it earned eight-point-one trillion won in operating profit in this year's second quarter. The figure is up 18 percent from the same period last year and up 22 percent from the previous quarter.
More than half of the profit came from brisk sales of its Galaxy S7 smartphones. Home appliances also produced operating profit in the trillion won range for the first time in seven years.
The firm added that it earned 50-point-nine trillion won in sales, up five percent from the same period in 2015 and up two percent from the first quarter.
The firm’s operating profit margin stood at 15-point-97 percent, narrowing the gap with Apple by a record seven-point-85 percentage points.
The last time Samsung Electronics’ quarterly operating profit topped eight trillion won was in the first quarter of 2014.
