Owners of new cars will be entitled to get another car or a full refund if serious defects in the engine, brakes or handle recur at least three times within one year of the vehicle purchase.
Drivers who suffer ordinary flaws, which would affect the value of a car, in the same part of the car more than four times or whose car repair took 30 days can also get another brand new car or a refund.
The Fair Trade Commission issued an advance notice on Wednesday of revisions to the standards for resolving related consumer disputes.
Under the current standard, car owners can get a new car or a refund if a serious flaw that can directly affect the driver's life is witnessed in the vehicle more than four times.
Also under the current standard, flaws that do not pose a direct threat to the driver’s life are not subject to an exchange or refund. The eligibility period for an exchange or refund is also based on the production date of the car, which has been at the center of complaints among drivers.
