The government has provided five-point-six billion won in compensation to 335 South Koreans who requested government assistance following the shutdown of the inter-Korean Gaeseong Industrial Complex in North Korea.
Unification Ministry Spokesman Jeong Joon-hee said in a news briefing on Wednesday that a total of 490 South Koreans who had worked at the joint complex requested compensation. Jeong said the government will swiftly provide compensation after reviewing additional requests.
The spokesman added that the government also provided roughly 259 billion won in insurance to 90 out of 112 South Korean firms that had signed up to the inter-Korean economic cooperation insurance. The figure is 80 percent of the amount the government is expected to pay.
Meanwhile, 43 companies that did not sign up to the inter-Korean economic cooperation insurance requested nearly 58 billion won in compensation. Jeong said that as of Tuesday, the government paid 27 billion won to 22 of the firms.
