Number of Seniors with Jobs Surpasses Employees in 20s

Anchor: The number of those in their sixties or above with jobs in South Korea has surpassed the number of employees in their twenties in the second quarter. Although the number of employed seniors has increased as many prepare for their later years, new hires of young people have fallen.
Our Kim In-kyung has more.

Report: Three-point-98 million South Koreans aged 60 or over had jobs in the second quarter, exceeding the three-point-78 million employees in their twenties during the same period.

Statistics Korea released its June employment tallies on Wednesday, showing the rise of senior employment.

The number of employed seniors first surpassed those in their twenties in the second quarter of 2014, after which their numbers have been fluctuating.

The number of employed twenties remained pretty constant in the past seven years, but seniors with jobs has risen sharply from just two-point-91 million in the second quarter of 2010 to nearly four million.

The aging of baby boomers is seen as one of the reasons for the increase in the number of working seniors.

Another cause of the rise in elderly employment is insufficient welfare after retirement. Many are forced to work because they have to continue caring for their adult children and are indebted.

Meanwhile, the quality of jobs for the elderly is continuing to deteriorate.

As of March, the number of nonregular workers in their sixties or above grew 12-point-three percent on year.

Experts say the government should come up with job policies for seniors, such as expanding public works, and create more decent jobs for young people in small and medium companies.
