SK Telecom and European information technology(IT) firms have agreed to work together to develop a roaming system for LoRa, a wireless radio frequency technology developed to create the low-power, wide-area networks required for Internet of Things(IoT) applications.
The South Korean wireless telecommunications operator said Thursday that the agreement was reached during a South Korea-European Union(EU) meeting on boosting IoT cooperation held in Nice, France, this week.
The envisioned roaming system is expected to provide diverse services that would enhance the convenience of travelers and their safety when touring among countries. With the system, baggage lost when traveling in Europe will be easily located if the luggage has an IoT-based positioning device attached to it.
During the meeting that began on Tuesday, SK Telecom proposed developing the roaming system with its EU partners, including IT firms CEA and EGM.
CEA and EGM, which are operating LoRa networks on a trial basis, welcomed SK Telecom’s offer.
