N. Korea Denies Abduction Claims to UN

North Korea has denied to the UN allegations that it abducted people from other countries, claiming such accusations are a political plot to disgrace the regime.

The UN Working Group on Enforced and Involuntary Disappearances(WGEID) on Wednesday disclosed Pyongyang's response to its inquiry about the suspected abduction of 27 foreigners by the regime.

The UN body said the North replied that it investigated the allegation but found that not even a similar case was found.

North Korea said the allegation was fabricated by the forces hostile to the North's government and is a political scheme meriting no consideration.

Pyongyang also said that the issue of abduction is nothing to do with UN’s noble humanitarian duties, calling on it to investigate those behind the accusation and gravely punish them.

It was the first time the North’s stance on the abduction allegation was disclosed through the UN, although Pyongyang has repeatedly denied the claims through its state media.

Choi Sung-yong, head of the civic organization Come Back Home, said the UN is looking into a list of 516 South Koreans the Seoul government compiled as being believed to abducted by North Korean agents and will send another inquiry to the North on the list afterward.
