Labor, Management Fail to Agree on 2017 Minimum Wage

Labor groups and business representatives have again failed to agree on next year’s minimum wage.

The Minimum Wage Council on Wednesday held the 12th meeting of the representatives of labor, management and the government in Sejong City to reach a consensus on how much next year’s minimum wage should be.

However, talks fell through as labor groups demanded a 65-point-eight percent hike in the wage to ten-thousand won from the current six-thousand-30 won, while the management called for a freeze.

The two sides did not present concessions in the meeting contrary to expectations. Labor groups and business representatives instead asked the council's civilian expert members to recommend a proper range for hikes.

The civilian experts proposed that the minimum wage be raised by between three-point-seven percent and 13-point-four percent. That's between six-thousand-253 won and six-thousand-838 won.
