Gangwon Province has finalized a high-speed rail project connecting its cities of Chuncheon and Sokcho after a preliminary feasibility test of the project was approved.
 
Gangwon Province said Saturday the decision was reached based on a comprehensive review in terms of the economic feasibility, policy aspects and balanced regional development. 
 
It said the project has been finalized following deliberations by the Finance Ministry's advisory meeting on assessment of fiscal projects.
 
Under the project, a single line 93-point-nine kilometer subway will be built between Chuncheon and Sokcho with a speed of 250 kilometers per hour.
 
Over two-point-two trillion won will go into the construction scheduled to take eight years.
 
Once completed, the travel time from Incheon International Airport to Sokcho will be shortened to an hour and 50 minutes.
 
Gangwon Province also hopes to boost tourism with Russia and China if a northern East Sea rail line connects to the Trans-Siberian Railway (TSR) and the Trans China Railroad (TCR) down the road.
