Defense Minister Han Min-koo says South Korea will provide the land on which to install the U.S. Terminal High Altitude Area Defense(THAAD) battery without shouldering additional expenses.
The minister made the remarks in a meeting with the leaders of the minor opposition People’s Party Friday morning, explaining that the THAAD deployment will be covered within the joint defense costs shared by South Korea and the U.S.
The minister said that the two allies agreed to deploy the U.S. weapons system in South Korea as a defensive measure against North Korea’s nuclear and missile threats. A South Korea-U.S. joint working-level team confirmed the need and usefulness of operating THAAD in the South during a three-month review.
Han affirmed that the THAAD battery will be operated only to counter and thwart missile and nuclear threats from the North.
He added that the government has not yet made a final decision on the location of the THAAD battery.
