S. Korea, US Agree to Deploy THAAD

Seoul and Washington have reached a final decision to deploy the U.S. Terminal High Altitude Area Defense(THAAD) battery in South Korea.

South Korea's Deputy Minister for Defense Policy Ryu Je-seung and Commander of the Eighth U.S. Army Thomas Vandal revealed the decision at a joint news conference Friday morning.

In a statement, the two sides said that the THAAD battery will be deployed at a U.S. base in South Korea.

They explained that the decision is to protect the military strength of the alliance and to secure the safety of South Korea and its citizens from the threat of North Korea's nuclear program, weapons of mass destruction and ballistic missiles.

The two sides are closely cooperating so that the deployment can be made as soon as possible.
