Gov’t to End Operations of 10 Aged Coal-fired Power Plants

In an effort to tackle fine dust problems, the government will close down ten aged coal-fired power plants upon the expiration of their operational lifespans.

The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy made the decision not to further extend the operations of the old power stations in a meeting on Wednesday.

The ministry said that it will shut down ten coal-fired power generators that have been in operation for more than 30 years.

They include ones located in Goseong in South Gyeongsang Province, Yeosu in South Jeolla Province, Boryeong in South Chungcheong Province and Gangneung in Gangwon Province.

For eight 20-year-old generators, major parts like turbines and facilities will be replaced and upgraded.

The ministry plans to restrict the establishment of new coal-fired power plants, and instead make more use of low-carbon, eco-friendly energy sources in the future.
