North Korea Discharges Dam Water to South

North Korea began releasing water from the Hwanggang Dam bordering South Korea.

A South Korean military official said that the floodgates are believed to have been opened at around 6 a.m. Wednesday.

The official said that the South was not notified of the water release by the North.

The military immediately informed K-Water and other related South Korean agencies of the water discharge from the North.

The South Korean military has been closely monitoring the water-level at the North Korean dam, which reached closer to its full capacity amid heavy torrential downpours.

The dam on the upper region on the Imjin River, which flows south across the inter-Korean border, is located about 42 kilometers north of the military demarcation line.

In September 2009, six South Korean campers were killed when North Korea released large amounts of water from the Hwanggang Dam onto the river without prior notice.
