N. Korea's Armed Forces Ministry May be Under Cabinet

South Korea says that more analysis is needed to confirm whether North Korea’s armed forces ministry came under the Cabinet during the Supreme People's Assembly convened last week.

The North’s Korean Central Television on Saturday showed a change in the introduction of Minister of People’s Armed Forces Pak Yong-sik. The ministry had been overseen by the National Defense Commission(NDC), which was dismantled with the launch of the State Affairs Commission during the parliamentary meeting last Wednesday.

Regarding the change in Pak’s title, South Korea’s Unification Ministry Spokesman Jeong Joon-hee said on Monday during a regular news briefing that more information is needed to acknowledge whether the Ministry of the People’s Armed Forces is now under the control of the Cabinet or if it was just a simple change in Pak’s title and he remains on the State Affairs Commission.

Cheong Seong-chang, the head of unification strategy at the Sejong Institute, said that the change indicates that the ministry now came under the Cabinet instead of the now-defunct NDC and its title was changed, too.
