Civic Group Calls for 13% Increase in Minimum Wage

A South Korean civic group has called for a 13 percent increase in next year’s minimum wage.

The Citizens’ Coalition for Economic Justice said on Monday that the 13 percent hike by the Minimum Wage Council should come as a first step to increase the nation’s hourly minimum wage to ten-thousand won.

The group said that if it’s hard to raise it to ten-thousand won right away, the nation should work to reach the level within several years in stages.

The nation’s minimum wage would reach ten-thousand won by 2020 if it is raised by 13 percent every year.

The civic group released the results of its survey of 105 experts on the economy, management and labor law, in which over 90 percent of the respondents called for an increase in the minimum wage.
