South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff (JSC) says it is closely monitoring movements of the North Korean military for a possible provocation.
The JCS believes that there is a possibility that Pyongyang will stage a provocation to mark its newly designated anniversary of the Strategic Rocket Force, which falls on Sunday, a day before Monday’s United States Fourth of July Independence Day.
The South Korean military is keenly watching North Korean troops and a possible launch of a Musudan mid-range missile, Rodong or Skud missile.
The North designated July 3 as its Strategic Rocket Force Day during a meeting of the Supreme People's Assembly last month.
The North had staged provocations around the U.S. Independence Day holiday. In 2006, Pyongyang fired off a Taepodong 2 long-range rocket and in 2009, it launched two medium-range Rodong missiles.
