National Security Adviser Kim Kwan-jin has opposed the proposal of a joint inter-Korean fishery zone as a solution to illegal Chinese fishing operations, citing North Korea's intentions.
Attending a meeting of the National Assembly House Steering Committee on Friday, Kim received a question from Minjoo Party lawmaker Lee Hoon.
Lee said the joint fishery zone idea was also suggested by some members of the ruling Saenuri Party as a way to address illegal Chinese fishing in Korean waters. He asked Kim if the proposal could be reviewed in positive light.
Kim said the joint fishery area was once attempted in the past but noted that what North Korea wants is to incapacitate the Northern Limit Line de-facto maritime border.
He concluded that the Northern Limit Line is South Korean waters and that the border should be defended.
