The EU ambassador to South Korea says the U.K. decision to leave the European Union known as Brexit will have limited effects on the South Korea-EU free trade agreement(FTA).
Ambassador and Head of the Delegation of the European Union to Seoul Gerhard Sabathil held a news conference at the Press Center in Seoul Friday to mark the fifth anniversary of the effectuation of the bilateral trade deal.
He said that through the FTA, South Korea has already reaped considerable benefits including tariff eliminations, and further tariffs will be lifted on small-sized cars and cosmetics which will expand bilateral trade volume.
The ambassador also predicted that South Korean vehicles will be more visible in EU member nations in the coming years.
He also brushed aside assessments that Brexit will trigger the departures of other EU nations from the single market.
He noted that the U.K. held a particular status within the EU to begin with, as it was not part of the eurozone and had many exceptions to trade regulations. He said it's difficult to compare Britain at the same level with the other 27 EU members.
