S. Korean Researchers Develop 5G Wireless Technology

South Korean researchers say they have developed a fifth-generation, or 5G, mobile communications technology that will allow faster data transfer speed.

The Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute announced Thursday that it succeeded in developing a 5G wireless network together with SK Telecom.

The institute said that the new radio access technology reduces service delay time to one-tenth of the existing fourth-generation technologies to allow sending digital data within two-thousandths of a second. That’s 25 times faster than the five-hundredths of a second that it takes for a person to recognize objects through sight or hearing.

Service delay time refers to the time needed for digital data to return to a handset after being sent from the device and passing through a base station.
