The government is considering the idea of designating some national holidays to be observed on a specific weekday of a certain month every year.
The government unveiled the plan on Tuesday when it revealed its economic policy plans to be carried out in this year's second half.
The government said it will review all of the national holiday dates and devise measures that will improve work efficiency, guarantee the people's right to rest and revitalize domestic demand.
Because the nation’s national holidays are set based on dates, the number of holidays differ every year as some holidays end up falling on a weekend. As a result, some had voiced that the inconsistent system hurts work efficiency and doesn't allow people to properly rest.
Many observers believe that designating holidays based on a certain weekday will lead to revitalizing domestic demand and service industries following the increase in the number of holidays.
The U.S. operates such a system under its Uniform Holiday bill. For example, it has designated the first Monday of September as Labor Day and the fourth Thursday of November as Thanksgiving.
