South Korea's air passenger traffic continued to rise at a steady pace in May.
According to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport on Tuesday, the number of air passengers in May jumped by four-point-seven percent from last year to eight-point-41 million.
Among them, the number of international passengers stood at five-point-68 million last month, marking a four-point-four percent on-year rise.
Most of the international routes saw a solid growth of passengers during the same period, including a 19 percent growth for flights between South Korea and Oceania and a nine-point-one percent growth for flights between South Korea and Southeast Asia.
Kyushu was the exception, with the number of passengers heading from South Korea to the eastern Japanese island falling by one percent.
Korean Air and Asiana Airlines accounted for 45-point-seven percent of international passenger flights by domestic carriers in May, while 17-point-five percent was assumed by South Korea’s low cost carriers.
The ministry predicted the upward trend for air travel will continue thanks to airliners’ efforts to increase the number of flight routes and raise the frequency of existing ones, as well as growing demand for international flights.
