WSJ Praises S. Korea for Wise Response to Brexit

The Wall Street Journal says South Korea's response to Britain’s referendum to leave the European Union was smart and should serve as a model for other countries including the U.S.

In an editorial entitled “South Korea’s Brexit Example” published on Sunday, the U.S. newspaper praised Foreign Minister Yun Byung-se for suggesting a bilateral free trade agreement with Britain following the U.K.'s shocking decision to part ways with the EU.

It noted that though Seoul's economy has seen low growth in recent years, damage could have been worse without "the healthy trade ties" it secured with the U.S., the EU and China, among other countries.

The Wall Street Journal explained that Seoul’s interest in a bilateral trade deal with London is meaningful since the trade volume between the two countries has been growing each year since 2009. It also mentioned South Korea is now Britain’s third-largest export market in Asia and 13th largest in the world.
