LG Uplus Opens Solar-powered LTE Cell Towers

South Korea’s mobile carrier LG Uplus plans to expand solar-powered long-term evolution (LTE) cell towers in order to enhance data and voice quality in mountainous areas and islands.

The firm said on Sunday that it has opened solar-powered LTE cell towers and launched services in four mountainous areas including Daegwallyeong in Gangwon Province, Mount Oseo and Mount Gyerong in South Chuncheong Province.

Solar-powered base stations can be set up and operated in locations where there is no electricity or where optic cables are not installed.

The firm plans to open solar-powered LTE cell towers in about 20 locations nationwide this year.
