Britain Decides to Leave EU in Referendum

Anchor: The British people have voted to withdraw from the European Union. The world’s political and economic landscapes are expected to see significant changes with the world’s fifth largest economy choosing to leave the EU after 43 years.
Our Bae Joo-yon has more.

Report: Around 1 p.m. Friday, South Korea time, around six hours after ballots of the European Union(EU) referendum began to be counted, it seemed very apparent that Britain had opted to scrap its EU membership.

Even before vote counting ended, the BBC said those who had voiced withdrawal from the EU had won in the latest referendum.

Final results showed that nearly 51-point-nine percent of voters opted to leave the EU and 48-point-one percent chose to stay, coming to mark a difference of some one-point-two million votes.

As a result, Britain will be exiting the bloc since joining in 1973 the European Economic Community, which later became the EU.

Now Britain must negotiate its withdrawal with the EU, a process that is expected to take between two and seven years.

During the negotiation period, financial jitters are expected to continue and the value of the British pound is expected to drop. Meanwhile, some observers say the U.S. dollar and the Japanese yen will continue to be strong.

Some observers have also forecast that Britain will suffer economic difficulties due to higher trade and investment barriers.
