Boryeong to Export Mud to New Zealand for Festival

Mud from Boryeong city in South Chungcheong Province will be exported to New Zealand, where it will be used for a mud festival coming up later this year.

A South Korean delegation, including Boryeong Mayor Kim Dong-il, on Tuesday signed a “festival partnership” with Rotorua Mayor Steve Chadwick in the city located on New Zealand's North Island.

Under the accord, Boryeong, which is famed for its annual mud festival, will pass on to Rotorua its know-how on organizing such an event and will also provide mud that will be used in festivals in the next five years. The mud will be exported in the form of a powder.

The move comes as the city of Rotorua will hold its first mud festival this December.

Situated in a volcanic region, Rotorua is said to have decided to import mud as the Maori, the indigenous people of New Zealand, hold the right of ownership for local mud. The process of refining mud is also costly.

It marks the second time for Boryeong mud to be exported. The first time was to Spain in August 2014. Boryeong had showcased its trademark mud festival at the Tomatina Festival in the Spanish city of Buñol that year.
