Plan to Build New Airport in Gyeongsang Region Scrapped

Efforts to build a new airport in the country's southeastern region have again been scrapped and a proposal has been made instead to expand Gimhae International Airport.

France’s ADP Ingénierie and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport said at a joint news conference on Tuesday that they decided that it would be optimal to expand the current Gimhae International Airport. The two agencies reached the conclusion after conducting preliminary feasibility studies on the best site for a new airport.

The agencies proposed that new facilities be built in the Gimhae airport, including additional runways and terminals. They also proposed improving transportation networks to the airport.

The ministry said that the move will sufficiently meet growing flight demands in the North and South Gyeongsang Provinces and allow people throughout the region to better access the Gimhae airport.

The issue of the new airport has long been at the center of a hot political debate.
