FSS Chief Calls for Measures to Protect Service Workers

Financial Supervisory Service(FSS) Govenor Zhin Woong-seob has urged financial institutions to produce effective measures to protect service sector workers who suffer from stress due to abusive customers.

The FSS chief made the call on Monday during a visit to a call center of a Woori Bank in Seoul to check on what kind of measures are in place to protect call center representatives.

A revised law stipulates banks, insurers and securities firms should create a grievance committee for workers engaging in so-called "emotional labor" such as call center operators starting from June 30th.

If call center employees refuse to deal with abusive customers, financial firms are required to switch the workers handling the customers. The firms are also required to provide counseling for workers.

Zhin said that the FSS will monitor financial firms to ensure their protective measures will help workers engaging in emotional labor.
