South Korean auto parts maker Hyundai Mobis said Thursday that it received a temporary licence and licence plate from the government to develop and test self-driving technologies for vehicles.
The company said it's the first time for a local auto parts maker to obtain the temporary licence for test driving an autonomous vehicle.
Hyundai Motor and a research team at Seoul National University were granted the licence previously.
Hyundai Mobis will test operate a self-driving Sonata sedan on government-permitted designated highways and sections of roads measuring a total length of 320 kilometers.
The car is equipped with a camera in the front and five radar arrays which will provide a 360-degree view of the car's surroundings, functioning as the eyes, hands and feet of a human driver.
Hyundai Mobis is the auto parts making unit of Hyundai Motor Group.
