Survey: Domestic Financial Firms Not Prepared Against EMP Attacks

A government survey has shown that many South Korean financial institutions are not well informed about the threats posed by electromagnetic pulse(EMP) strikes.

The Financial Services Commission(FSC) surveyed some 40 domestic financial companies to check how prepared they are against possible EMP attacks from North Korea.

In the survey, most of the respondents answered that they only have a rough concept of EMP attacks in mind. But a majority of them agreed on the need to devise measures to prevent related threats.

EMP bombs refer to state-of-the-art weapons that generate high-power electromagnetic energies to paralyze electric devices and communication networks of the enemy.

The U.S. used EMP weapons to disturb the air defense network of enemy forces during the Gulf War and the war in Iraq in the early 1990s and 2000s.
