BOK Chief Stresses Employment as Key for Economic Growth

Bank of Korea(BOK) Governor Lee Ju-yeol has stressed the importance of creating jobs for the nation's economic growth.

At the opening ceremony for the Bank of Korea International Conference 2016 Monday in Seoul, Lee pressed the government to come up with an active employment policy.

While arguing that boosting household earnings by providing more jobs would spur consumption at home, the BOK chief called for creating more positions in the service industry and supporting business startups.

In a bid to ensure increased household earnings would lead to more spending, Lee also called for reducing concerns over economic uncertainties by strengthening social safety nets.

Noting the nation’s prolonged low-growth trend since the 2008 global financial crisis, Lee said there is a growing consensus that employment must be a driving force for economic growth.
