The Sunday Times reported that North Korea appears to be the prime suspect in a cyber attack on the Belgium-based Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication(SWIFT) system two weeks ago.
The Britain-based paper on Sunday cited cyber crime experts saying the hackers used the same malware from the 2014 Sony Pictures hacking.
In the attack two weeks ago, hackers succeeded in sending money from the U.S. Federal Reserve Bank of New York to the Philippines. They are said to have received proper identification and created a message ordering that the money be transferred.
SWIFT's financial messaging services are used by some eleven-thousand financial institutions across the world including central banks and firms. The co-operative was founded in 1973 by 240 North American financial companies aiming to create an enclosed-network to manage transfers and remittances.
