A recent report has alleged one in four North Korean children at nurseries helped by the UN’s World Food Program(WFP) are malnourished.
The Voice of America(VOA) based in Washington reported on Friday that 25-point-four percent of North Korean children at WFP-assisted nurseries in the communist country are suffering from developmental problems due to undernutrition, citing a recent report on North Korea by the UN organization.
The report also said that one in three children under the age of five and half of children aged one or two suffered from anemia.
The report added that about 81 percent of North Koreans are not receiving proper amounts of nutrition, with their protein and fat intake at 70 to 85 percent of the international standard.
The WFP had planned to assist two-point-two million North Koreans in 87 counties from July 2013 to June this year, a project expected to require 196 million U.S. dollars in donations. But as of May 12th, donations have reached about 99 million dollars.
The WFP said it needed about 126 million dollars for a new, 30-month food aid program slated to begin this July for one-point-seven million North Koreans.
