Seoul's Defense Ministry has brushed off a proposal by North Korean leader Kim Jong-un to hold inter-Korean military talks brought up during the regime's seventh party congress.
Seoul defense officials on Sunday dismissed Kim’s comments on peace, reunification and inter-Korean relations, saying they were repeats of similar remarks made in the past by the North.
The officials said that chances for military talks are low as of now. They stressed that talks are meaningless unless the North first shows its sincerity towards denuclearization with actions.
Kim on Friday proposed the talks during a report to the central committee of the ruling Workers’ Party.
Kim said talks between military officials of the North and South would defuse tensions and remove reasons for clashes in the demilitarized zone separating the two Koreas. He added that the North was willing to discuss and resolve typical topics that the two sides are interested in.
