South Korea’s military is strengthening its readiness amid the possibility North Korea will engage in armed provocations on Friday upon the seventh congress of its ruling Workers’ Party of Korea.
A military official said that the North could possibly show congress participants images of an artillery exercise using the model of South Korea's presidential office.
He said the weather could become a variable as it is mostly cloudy and rainy in the North.
The North has been preparing to show a large-scale artillery drill at the Daewonri training site near Pyongyang with a half-sized model of South Korea's presidential office.
Military authorities are also not ruling out the possibility that the North could pursue a fifth nuclear test during the party congress.
A government source said that no particular movements have been detected at the North’s Punggyeri nuclear test site. But as a precaution, the source said that the South is boosting its military preparedness to be ready for any situation.
