Members of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia, or CICA, have for the first time condemned North Korea's nuclear and missile tests and demanded Pyongyang to give up its nuclear ambitions.
The demands were part of a statement on Asian peace, security, stability and sustainability after the fifth foreign ministers’ meeting on regional security, held in Beijing on Thursday.
CICA members noted the North’s fourth nuclear test in January, as well as its long-range missile launch in February, and its test launches of intermediate-range missiles and a submarine-launched ballistic missile this month.
CICA members, including Seoul's Foreign Minister Yun Byung-se, called the acts violations and outright disregard of UN Security Council resolutions, condemning them “in the strongest terms.”
The statement added that CICA welcomed and supported UN Resolution 2270.
It also vowed to strengthen international cooperation to pressure Pyongyang to end its nuke program in a complete, verifiable and irreversible way, in accordance with the resolution and the September 2005 six-party joint agreement.
