Gov't Introduces Equipment of Nation's 1st Lunar Orbiter

The Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning has introduced equipment that will be installed on the nation’s first lunar orbiter, which is expected to be launched in 2018.

The orbiter will carry three pieces of equipment, including a wide-field polaroid camera, a device that measures the moon’s magnetic field and a gamma-ray spectrometer.

The experimental orbiter will study the moon’s geographical features from an altitude of 100 kilometers for more than a year. Its key mission will be to study the moon’s surface and surrounding areas as well as explore rare minerals.

The wide-field polaroid camera can take pictures of the moon’s entire surface. The captured images will be used as basic data when deciding on possible landing spots for lunar space crafts. The camera will also be used to investigate the type and size of substances on the front and back side of the moon.

With the gamma-ray spectrometer, data can be obtained on the gamma rays that are emitted from the moon’s surface.
