S. Korean Automakers See Increased Sales at Home

South Korean carmakers saw record sales in the first three months of the year.

The seven automakers including Hyundai Motor and Kia Motors sold 368-thousand-492 cars in the country in the first quarter, breaking the record of 362-thousand-856 vehicles sold domestically in the first quarter of 2011.

The extension of individual consumer tax cuts from the end of last year to June this year appears to have boosted consumer confidence, leading to better sales.

The seven automakers, meanwhile, saw sales increase six-point-nine percent in the January to March period this year, compared to the same period a year earlier.

An auto industry official said car sales are expected to hit highs in the second quarter as well due to the extension of the individual consumer tax cut.
