FSS Looking into 195 S. Koreans on Tax Haven List

The Financial Supervisory Service(FSS) is considering probing South Koreans listed in the recently revealed Panama Papers suspected of being involved in illegal foreign exchange transactions.

An official at the FSS said Tuesday that the move came after the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists(ICIJ) disclosed the confidential documents on Monday created by the Panamanian law firm, Mossack Fonseca, regarding information on offshore companies.

The papers included the names of 195 people who declared South Korean addresses. Names unveiled in the documents, meanwhile, included those of incumbent and former leaders of various countries as well as celebrities.

The official said the agency is considering launching an investigation if it finds substantial proof that the nation's foreign exchange law was violated. Under the Foreign Exchange Transaction Law, a South Korean national is obligated to report to the government in the event of establishing an overseas corporation.
