S. Korea to Foster Insect Industry

The government has unveiled a five-year comprehensive plan to foster the country’s insect industry.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs said on Monday that it will increase the size of the domestic insect market to 500 billion won and the number of insect farms to 12-hundred by 2020.

The ministry will encourage farmers to establish regional networks to enhance their competitiveness.

The regional networks will help ensure steady distribution of quality insect products supplied by local farmers.

The government will also set up a facility to distribute larvae or caterpillars of insects, control insect diseases and operate a management system for insect breeding.

In addition, the ministry plans to invest 15 billion won until 2020 to develop the breeding and distribution system to mass produce insect-based feed and food materials.
