Gov't to Inject 100 Billion Won to Develop Supercomputers

The Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning will inject more than 100 billion won over the next decade to develop supercomputers utilizing domestic technologies.

The ministry said Monday the project is aimed at supporting efforts to realize an intelligence information society that arose from interests recently sparked by artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things(IoT) and big data.

The supercomputers will be equipped to save, process and use massive amounts of data at high speeds.

The ministry will divide the development project into two stages. From this year to 2020, the ministry is aiming to develop a supercomputer that has the capacity of more than one petaflop(PF). Between 2021 and 2025, the ministry plans to gradually develop a supercomputer with a performance of 30 PFs or higher.

A PF refers to a computer processing speed that can be expressed as one quadrillion floating point operations per second.
