N. Korea Officially Blocks Facebook, S. Korean Sites

The Associated Press said Friday that North Korea has officially announced it is blocking all social media and access to South Korean websites.

The report said that the North's Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications announcement was posted this week at the country's main mobile service provider, Koryolink, and other places serving Internet users.

In the announcement, the North said that "anti-republic false propaganda websites and adult websites" are blocked, and mentioned YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Voice of America and South Korean media sites.

The AP said the move underscores Pyongyang's concern about the spread of online information.

The Russian news agency, TASS, also said last September that North Korea had blocked foreigners' access to Facebook and YouTube.

The AP report said that foreigners in North Korea had previously been able to surf the Web freely while the North Korean public is typically only allowed access to a sealed-off, government-sanctioned intranet.
