Oceans Ministry to Install Underwater Obstacles Against Illegal Chinese Fishing

The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries says it will set up large structures underwater in the Yellow Sea to block illegal fishing by Chinese ships in the area.

The ministry told reporters on Thursday that the man-made rocks measuring 13-point-two meters both in width and height and weighing 53-point-three tons will be placed underwater east of South Korea’s islands in the Yellow Sea.

They are designed in a way so that the nets employed by Chinese ships will get stuck on the rocks, preventing their fishing operations.

The ministry said more will also be set up near Yeonpyeong, another Yellow Sea island, between July and August to counter increasing illegal operations of Chinese fishing ships in the region.

The ministry said that it will take more measures seeing how effective the move is through video imaging inspections using sonic scanners.
