Unification Minister Hong Yong-pyo says that after North Korea’s fourth nuclear test and long-range missile launch, a firm and effective response rather than dialogue is what is needed to make Pyongyang change.
The minister, during a speech in Seoul on Wednesday, said that the North is acting abnormally.
Hong said that the government has not closed the door on engaging in talks with the North, but that Seoul will, for now, opt for pressure over dialogue. He added that the government will pursue dialogue in the long term if the North shows signs of change.
Regarding the shutdown of the Gaeseong Industrial Complex, the minister said that the government could not continue operations while the international community is imposing sanctions against the North.
He said that the government is now focusing on putting pressure on the North while preparing for progress and peace in inter-Korean relations for the long term.
