The Ministry of Public Safety and Security will hold a meeting in Seoul on Thursday on ways South Korea and China can jointly handle earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
The ministry’s working-level officials that tackle earthquake prevention and large-scale, complex natural disasters and experts will represent South Korea at the meeting. Representing China will be the head of China’s Active Volcano Research Center and the head of a research institute that studies the active mountain that sits on the China-North Korea border.
Participants will share ways their countries respond to quakes and volcano activity and will also discuss measures to cooperate on handling such disasters.
Last year, China witnessed 50 earthquakes that surpassed a magnitude of five. China is said to have 14 active volcanoes.
Although earthquakes are rare in South Korea, experts have said the country is not completely invulnerable to a deadly quake.
