Gov't to Cut Discretionary Spending in Next Year's Budget by 10%

The government will cut discretionary spending in next year’s budget plan by ten percent and use the saved funds for policies to create jobs.

The decision was reached in a cabinet meeting on Tuesday, requiring all central and local government agencies and public organizations to draft more thrift spending plans for 2017.

Under the plan devised by the Ministry of Strategy and Finance, the government will reduce or abolish public projects that are deemed inadequate or ranked low in priority.

Out of this year’s budget of 386 trillion won, discretionary spending accounts for 53 percent or 203 trillion won.

When excluding costs that cannot be cut, including labor and basic costs, discretionary spending amounts to 168 trillion won.
