North Korea's military has conducted landing drills on a mock South Korean shore supervised by leader Kim Jong-un.
The North’s state-run Korean Central News Agency(KCNA) on Sunday showed images of the training of amphibious landings conducted in the North. It is the first time that North Korean state media showed images of such training with signs specifically designating the “south” as a part of its operations area.
The KCNA said the latest training aims to test the organizational and leadership abilities of the regime's landing forces and to upgrade the capabilities of its forces to strengthen coastal defense.
The report added that North Korean forces who received training under Kim vowed to achieve military feats in any future “liberation” of the South.
The North revealed images of amphibious training in 2013 with signs showing areas under “enemy” occupation. Pyongyang also unveiled images of amphibious landings on islands in 2014.
The most recent drills come as South Korea and the US continue their annual joint military exercises, seen by the North as preparation for war against it.
