'N. Korea Requests UNSC Discuss S. Korea-US Drills'

Japan's Kyodo News said Thursday that North Korea has requested the UN Security Council to pick up the issue of joint South Korea-U.S. drills as an agenda item for discussion.

The Kyodo report said that North Korean ambassador to the United Nations Ja Song-nam on Wednesday sent a letter to this effect to Angola's Ambassador to the UN. The African nation is current chair of the UN Security Council.

In the letter, the North Korean envoy argued that the ongoing military exercise between the South and the United States, the largest to date, is a grave threat to not only the North but also to global peace and stability.

Kyodo said that despite Pyongyang's latest move to protest the joint drills, it is unlikely the request will be accepted as no member state on the Security Council actively supports the North's claim.
