Chinese Automaker to Build Plant in Gwangju

A Chinese carmaker Joulong will build a plant in the South Korean city of Gwangju in Jeolla Province.

Gwangju Mayor Yoon Jang-hyun and an executive of the Chinese firm signed a memorandum of understanding on Wednesday at city hall.

Under the agreement, the carmaker will invest 250 billion won to build a manufacturing plant for vehicles and parts by 2020 with a production capacity of 100-thousand vehicles a year.

The city expects the investment to create about six thousand jobs.

The Chinese carmaker plans to begin designing the plant in the second half of the year and mass-produce two thousand E6 electric vans, which accommodates up to 18 passengers, beginning in 2017.

It will then produce 20-thousand electric vans and 80-thousand other vehicles a year from 2020, after the plant is completed.
